Motivation to Exercise

By James Anderson on

This whole “exercise thing” can be so annoying. From finding the time to finding the motivation, exercise – can be a real bitch.

We both know it’s good for us, so why is it so difficult to stay on top of?

Well, I think there are 3 main problems.

Problem #1 - It’s painful.

We’re genetically wired to try and achieve pleasure whilst avoiding pain. We create a “pleasure hierarchy” for ourselves, putting the most important things first and everything else, well, who cares.

After all, which would give you more pleasure?

Staying in your warm bed on a cold winters morning or doing burpees at 6am?

So how do we overcome this?

Solution - Set goals.

Create an inspiring vision that allows you to rise above “the workout” and able to see the bigger,...

How to Utilise Meditation to Curb Cravings

By Geraldine Coren on

Sugar cravings. We all know how powerful they can be, whispering to us that we MUST have that chocolate, that glass of wine, that cake! It’s like a voice in our ear – and an impulse felt in the body too – distracting us from our goals to be healthy and vital. Yet we all know where acting on our cravings too often leads us. The cycle of trying to resist, then indulging, feeling guilty and even sick, berating ourselves when we know our behaviour isn’t good for us ... and then setting up the sugar craving pattern to be repeated all over again.

Most of us have heard of the benefits of meditation, how it can slow down a busy mind and calm the nervous system. But meditation is more than just focusing and relaxing. It is a powerful tool for...

Mindfulness in Business

By Geraldine Coren on

Mindfulness is developed through simple and easy-to-use practises that can give us insight into ourselves, our attitudes and brings more objectivity and self-mastery to our lives.

Allowing time for mindfulness in the work environment will help us move away from working on 'automatic pilot', to recognise our reactions and what triggers them to help us make better decisions, reduce stress levels, increase focus and concentration and improve performance.

Try incorporating the following mindfulness practises into your workplace environment.

Try returning

Self Nurturance? I don't have Time!

By Leanne Hall on

We hear it everywhere, advice to “self-nurture” and take time out. While that’s all fine if you are a lady of leisure with all the time in the world, what about the rest of us?

Fact = Life is busy, and when the going gets tough, it’s not every one else who suffers, it’s you.

So what is “self-nurturance? In case you live under a rock and have missed it, there is a massive cultural movement taking hold. Words and phrases such as “holistic health” “mindfulness” “clean eating” have entered our daily lexicon. Words, which until recently, were found only in the books of naturopaths, yoga instructors and other holistic health professionals. This is certainly a good thing. It means that as a society we are beginning to understand the...

What is Wellness Coaching?

By Mel Ingram on

If we define wellness as the balance of body, mind and spirit, living successfully and ageing gracefully, then wellness coaching is the process by which we gain all of that. We are obviously very familiar with the use of coaching in sport but the role of a wellness coach differs in that there are more subtle methods used that don’t involve ranting and raving, or even giving ‘advice’. Rather a wellness coach will support, encourage and facilitate change in the direction you would like to move. It is often about the introduction of healthy behaviours and includes small steps towards implementing healthy behaviours into a lifestyle often already crammed full of ‘other stuff’.

Who can benefit from Wellness Coaching?

Often the self motivated...

Weight Loss vs. Weight Maintenance - How much exercise do we really need?

By Kirsty Welsh on

This is a great topic for you Dry July challenge, but it’s also seriously tough to answer in a short article. If it were as simple as a black and white answer to this question, we would not still be asking this very question. Weight loss versus weight maintenance. We all know we need to move to feel good and be healthy, not only on a daily basis but also for the long-term. I know I want to be a ninja-yogi nana, so if I don’t move more now, I’ll be a long way behind on that sweet, sweet goal. Most of us however, wish to either lose body fat, or maintain our current size, focusing on exercise for specific or general health or muscle toning. No matter our goals, we all want to feel better in and of ourselves. So it makes sense to...
