How To Meet People When You're Not Drinking

By Dr. Nikki Goldstein on

It’s easy to meet people after a few drinks out on the town. Your inhibitions are lowered, their inhibitions are lowered, you have more confidence to talk to strangers and off you go into the drunken night. It’s not rock science, but the fuel for your rocket is alcohol. So what happens when the bottle runs dry and the tap is turned off and it’s time for a single to survive Dry July? How then do you meet new people?

1. Online

If you have been living under a rock these days than you might have not experienced the world of dating websites and apps like Tinder and Happn. These sites and apps not only increase the amount of people you might be able to meet, but it’s also like a virtual bar where your glass can remain empty or full of herbal tea. Just make sure to put on your profile that you are currently partaking in Dry July and therefore are up for meeting new people over alcohol free dates.

 2. Try talking to strangers

If for one moment we all stopped looking at our smart phones, clutching to them as a safety blanket when in public or when kept waiting for anything, just maybe we might notice the good looking eligible people around us. Put your smart phone in your pocket or your bag and make chit chat with strangers and those around you. Try discussing the weather with that person in the lift, ask that guy or girl you see every morning in the queue for a coffee if they had a good weekend or compliment someone on something they are wearing. Any excuse to start a conversation will do, and you never know where it might lead….

3. Spice up your social life

Just like getting stuck in a rut with your bedroom life, so can your social life suffer from this too. Do you go to the same restaurants? Do you hang out with the same friends? Attend the same gym for the past 5 years, go to the same park to walk the dog? Why not try something new! Getting out of your comfort zone will not only allow you to come across new people but also stimulate your mind too, making you a better person to have a random conversation with when you do find new people to talk to

 4. Ask for your friends to hook you up

Lets get old fashioned shall we? If baffles me why people don’t set more of their friends up. Maybe we are too selfish or maybe too focused on our own lives, but if you are single and dry this July than why not give fate a push. Ask your friends, your friend’s boyfriends or your work colleagues if they have anyone who might be good for you.

21 Days to Change Your Ways: Just Keep Swimming

By Kirsty Welsh on

Anything great takes time. We look at the best parts of others and compare them to the worst parts of ourselves. Quick fixes, gadgets, ab crunchers, weight-loss shakes, we are suckers for the overnight ‘answers’ to our health issues! No one is healthy and happy without some long-term effort. But the cool thing is, small and realistic changes over time can create massive shifts in our wellbeing! So no matter where you’re at in your health journey, just know that so long as you’re making consistent and positive changes, you’re doing a fab job!

I personally find 21 to be a magic number. It is well known that it takes ’21 days to make or break a habit’ although there doesn’t seem to be any clinical research behind it, but I also find that...

How to Relieve Stress without Booze

By Staff Writer on

Everybody has different methods of dealing with stress. Doing Dry July may be particularly difficult for those who use a drink or two to unwind at the end of the day. Here are some alternative techniques for stress management that don’t include alcohol:

Be Mindful

The buzzword in the mental health world lately is “Mindfulness”. Different mindfulness techniques include focusing on your breathing or other senses in order to clear your mind, doing an Adult Colouring Book (you can find these pretty much anywhere), and of course, meditation. These techniques can be done in no more than 15 minutes, so do them in the office if you have to. The idea is to get all the stressful things off your mind and replace them with calming thoughts,...
