How To Date Without Alcohol

By Dr. Nikki Goldstein on

It seems that being single and living in Australia there is an expectation that you either like to go out drinking or when you meet another single person you might go out and meet up over a drink. Our romantic and single lives are holding hands with an alcoholic beverage. Now being a Sexologist I can tell you that one or two drinks can be great for nerves or even bedroom anxieties, but how many people do you know (including yourself) that has the ability to stop there, going further into tipsy town (or worse) doing things that might not have been done or saying things they wish they hadn't. Blame it on the alcohol? I think not, some especially women might argue that it just lowered your inhibitions and you wanted to do it/say it anyway.

So why not take Dry July not only to focus on your health but your dating and alcohol habits. Try to meet people when you are not out drinking at a bar. Have you ever thought of speaking to the person next to you on the train in the morning or that person you always say hi to at the gym but don’t know much about them? In the clear day’s sky with a clear mind, just say hi. This is what I like to call, old fashioned dating and for many of us when our parents met it was not out drinking on a Saturday night. Let’s turn off the technology, cut back on the booze and wind the clock back a bit.

And for that matter when you go out on a date with that person that you maybe haven’t met at a bar, why not try something different than a cocktail or dinner with bottles of wine. It will not only show that you can be creative and provide an activity that is possible unique but it will also give you the opportunity to be you and only you. Even if that means a few extra nerves, it will only show you are human after all.

This Dry July, put down your drink, take off your beer goggles and look around you – you never know who you might just find.

21 Days to Change Your Ways: Just Keep Swimming

By Kirsty Welsh on

Anything great takes time. We look at the best parts of others and compare them to the worst parts of ourselves. Quick fixes, gadgets, ab crunchers, weight-loss shakes, we are suckers for the overnight ‘answers’ to our health issues! No one is healthy and happy without some long-term effort. But the cool thing is, small and realistic changes over time can create massive shifts in our wellbeing! So no matter where you’re at in your health journey, just know that so long as you’re making consistent and positive changes, you’re doing a fab job!

I personally find 21 to be a magic number. It is well known that it takes ’21 days to make or break a habit’ although there doesn’t seem to be any clinical research behind it, but I also find that...

How to Relieve Stress without Booze

By Staff Writer on

Everybody has different methods of dealing with stress. Doing Dry July may be particularly difficult for those who use a drink or two to unwind at the end of the day. Here are some alternative techniques for stress management that don’t include alcohol:

Be Mindful

The buzzword in the mental health world lately is “Mindfulness”. Different mindfulness techniques include focusing on your breathing or other senses in order to clear your mind, doing an Adult Colouring Book (you can find these pretty much anywhere), and of course, meditation. These techniques can be done in no more than 15 minutes, so do them in the office if you have to. The idea is to get all the stressful things off your mind and replace them with calming thoughts,...
