About Us

Established 175 years ago, The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is Victoria’s first public hospital and our care, research and innovations have touched the lives of millions of Australians.

The RMH was founded to provide care to the people of our growing city. Originally known as the Melbourne Hospital and located on the corner of Lonsdale and Swanston Streets, the RMH had just 10 beds and treated six patients on its first day. Today, there are about 260 emergency department presentations, 36 emergency surgeries, and about 720 outpatient appointments every day at our Grattan Street site alone.

Our comprehensive cancer services are internationally renowned and are one of Victoria’s largest cancer care and treatment centres, treating thousands of patients each year. As demand for cancer services increase, there is growing pressure on equipment, patient care items and infrastructure resources which are critical to ensure we provide excellence in cancer care.

We are proud to always be there when it matters most for our community but could not do this without you!

With your support this Dry July, we’re aiming to raise much needed funds which will enable The Royal Melbourne Hospital to continue to provide the best possible care, treatment and support for all of our cancer patients.

Recliners for Ward 7B

The Royal Melbourne Hospital opened a new 32 bed state-of-the-art cancer ward in April. The hospital will use funds raised through Dry July 2016 to purchase new recliners which will complement the space available in each inpatient room and allow family and friends to be comfortable when visiting for an extended period of time.

3 East Waiting Room Refubishment

Here are some of your DJ funds at work.

3 East Nurse Unit Manager, Troy, says a huge thanks for your support! “Thank you! Our 3 East waiting room now has comfy chairs for patients who are waiting for an appointment or even recovering from a routine procedure. These chairs have made a significant difference for our cancer patients and their families and we again need your support this Dry July to raise much needed funds for our cancer services.”

Here are some of our amazing staff from our 7B cancer ward who are truly grateful for the support Dry July provides. They know that going booze free this July is easy in comparison to what our cancer patients are going through. They need you to sign up or donate today in support of Royal Melbourne cancer services – THANK YOU!

Meet Amy…One of many inspirational Royal Melbourne cancer patients

Being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was a huge shock to Amy and her family. Amy went to her doctor for some chest pain and a few days later she found herself beginning chemotherapy. After chemotherapy, Amy underwent a bone marrow transplant and thankfully, is on the road to recovery. It was a long and painful process and she was scared, but Amy said that if it wasn’t for the support of her loving family, and the wonderful staff at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, she wouldn’t be here today.

“Please support The Royal Melbourne this Dry July. It’s a great way to help RMH cancer patients and services. They need all the resources that they can get. The more resources they get the more comfortable the patients are and it makes a real difference to patients like me. The staff genuinely care about your health and wellbeing and they try to do everything for you. I am so grateful to everyone at The Royal Melbourne, they’re incredible.” Amy.
