G'day, I'm Blake.
Dad of two little girls, husband to my best friend, and someone who has spent most of his adult life reaching for a drink at the end of a hard day without really stopping to ask why.
This July I'm doing something I've honestly never done before — saying no to alcohol. Not because I have to. Because I want to be better. A better dad. A better husband. A better version of the bloke my girls are going to grow up looking at.
But this isn't just about me.
I'm raising money for Bowel Cancer Australia — and the numbers behind this disease stopped me in my tracks.
Around 15,500 Australians were diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2024. Over 5,200 Australians died from it in 2023 — that's nearly one in ten of all cancer deaths in this country. (Barnes & Noble) And here's the one that really hits: if it's caught early, over 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated. (Barnes & Noble) Ninety percent. The difference between life and death is often just a test people didn't know they needed.
The lifetime risk of a bowel cancer diagnosis is 1 in 16 Australians. (Chronicle Books) That's not a distant statistic. That's someone at your dinner table.
I'm not a doctor. I'm not a scientist. I'm just a bloke from Rockingham with two daughters under five who wants to raise as much money as possible for an organisation doing genuinely important work — and use this month to prove to myself that I don't need alcohol to unwind, connect, or celebrate.
Thirty one days. No booze. Every dollar counts.
If you can spare anything at all, I'd be incredibly grateful. And if you've been thinking about getting screened — please just do it.
Let's go. 🙏
