This July, I’m embracing Dry July, not because I’m a frequent drinker, I very rarely drink alcohol—my friends would attest to that—but to spark inspiration, awareness and raise essential funds for cancer research.
This year brought a significant turning point when a precancerous tumour was discovered on my pancreas in February, leading to the removal of part of my pancreas and spleen at the end of April. It was a fortunate discovery, one that highlighted the importance of early detection and research. As I am currently recovering, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on many areas of my life, especially ways we numb and suppress our emotions. While sitting in the hospital, my 8-year-old asked, “How did this happen to you, you’re so healthy?” and my 12-year-old echoed, “Yeah, you’re so healthy.” They witness me caring for my body—mentally, physically, and emotionally. Yet, I’ve realised that for years I suppressed many emotions. Holding compassion for others often led me to suppress my own anger, a habit taught from a young age. Inspired by Gabor Maté’s insights into numbing behaviors, Brené Brown’s advocacy for vulnerability, and Lael Stone’s focus on emotional intelligence, I’ve found strength in processing my emotions through breathwork, mindfulness, exercise, and journaling.
By committing to a month without alcohol, I aim to encourage others to reconsider their coping mechanisms and build genuine emotional resilience. Together, we can support each other, strengthen our connections, and contribute to the vital research that saves lives, making a meaningful impact on the world and those affected by cancer.
