The Dry July campaign has been making a real difference at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre (CPMCC) Westmead in the many years that we have been associated with this remarkable fundraising campaign.
The CPMCC's participation in Dry July campaign for the past 12 years has raised incredible funds providing funding for cancer service and facility improvements for the benefit of cancer patients and their carers during their cancer journey with us. The projects funded by Dry July have directly influenced the experience of cancer patients, carers and their families while they are being treated or visiting the centre with the aim to make this difficult time of their lives that little bit easier and less stressful.
The CPMCC Westmead is a purpose-built, state of the art facility which matches anything in the world. Located within Westmead Hospital, it is an integrated comprehensive centre which serves a population of over 1 million in the West of Sydney with a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of cancer, palliative care and haematology blood disorders. We provide fully integrated research, prevention, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation programs for patients and families coping with cancer.

Radiation Oncology Patient Education Booklets |
The Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre is using funds from Dry July 2015 to design and print booklets aimed at helping introduce patients to radiation therapy treatment and what to expect at the Centre's 3 facilities.
The booklets should help patients understand what treatments entail and will reinforce verbal discussions with their treating team.

With Knowledge Comes Power at Westmead Hospital |
Staff at Westmead Hospital’s Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre are the stars of two new videos designed to give newly diagnosed patients peace of mind. A film project With Knowledge Comes Power was recently unveiled in conjunction with health content specialists Tonic Health Media, and was funded by Dry July.
The films take viewers on a tour of the facility led by staff, who answer frequently asked questions by patients about to start chemotherapy and radiation therapy. “It was something all of us at the centre have been talking about doing for a long time,” Cancer Centre Medical and Network Services Manager Jenny Butler said. “Patients often tell us ‘I don’t remember being told that’ and we believe that that is because they get so much information up front immediately after the diagnosis and often can’t take it all in. The video which they can access at home via our website or a CD allows them to digest the information in their own time, thus preparing them for the road ahead and hopefully allaying their fears of the unknown.”Staff consulted patients on the script, including Henry Wegwitz. Henry wishes the video existed when he was diagnosed. "The first steps would have been easier knowing what was going to happen,” he said. “The video prepares them for what’s coming and what to expect,” he said.Tonic Health Media scripted and produced the videos.Watch them here:

With funding raised by Dry July in 2015 and Christmas trees donated by David Jones, dedicated staff have dressed up the Cancer Centre and oncology ward at Westmead Hospital to make it that little bit more homely for patients and their families who have to be there for treatment at this time of year.
