About Us

The Dry July campaign has been making a real difference at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre (CPMCC) Westmead in the many years that we have been associated with this remarkable fundraising campaign.

The CPMCC's participation in Dry July campaign for the past 12 years has raised incredible funds providing funding for cancer service and facility improvements for the benefit of cancer patients and their carers during their cancer journey with us. The projects funded by Dry July have directly influenced the experience of cancer patients, carers and their families while they are being treated or visiting the centre with the aim to make this difficult time of their lives that little bit easier and less stressful.

The CPMCC Westmead is a purpose-built, state of the art facility which matches anything in the world. Located within Westmead Hospital, it is an integrated comprehensive centre which serves a population of over 1 million in the West of Sydney with a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of cancer, palliative care and haematology blood disorders. We provide fully integrated research, prevention, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation programs for patients and families coping with cancer.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of people affected by cancer, by signing up or donating to our Dry July campaign. Let’s bring hope and support to cancer patients who need it most.

Dry July funds help Westmead support people like Jane

I have been a patient at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre Westmead for the past 12 months.

When I first started attending, I found the centre very clinical and it reminded you that you were visiting the hospital yet again for another appointment.

After Dry July 2019 the funds raised gave the centre a much needed upgrade.

It was now a bright, peaceful and more comfortable place to visit. The beautiful artwork gave you something to lose your thoughts in and a more comfortable seat made the wait not as hard.

The Centre does some wonderful work for me and countless other patients and the funds raised really do assist those undergoing cancer treatment.

Thanks to funds raised through Dry July 2019, comfort and colour transforms cancer patient waiting areas

With the help of funds raised by 2019 Dry July participants, patients and carers are walking into more comfortable and welcoming space thanks to an upgrade of the Westmead Hospital Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre.

New lounges and chairs, phone charging stations, TV screens, sound absorption wall tiles, and a fresh colour scheme with Australian-themed artworks are among the features of the five overhauled patient waiting rooms, designed from scratch with consumer input.

Lung cancer patient and Vietnam War veteran Steven Chamulko said he appreciated the thought that went into the redesign.

“When you walk into somewhere that’s colourful, light and bright you feel better, rather than somewhere drab that gets you down,” Steven said.

“I’ve always regarded Westmead Hospital as well-designed, with the open spaces and corridors where you can look outside and see Mother Nature. It makes a big difference.”

Architectural project officer Latifi Farah said, “The spaces are more modern and fresh with high-quality, Australian-made furniture that’s hospital grade but doesn’t look like it belongs in a hospital”

“We want people to feel more comfortable coming into a nicer space that makes them feel better.”

Westmead Hospital receives a grant from the Dry July Foundation

We're proud to announce that Westmead Hospital - The Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre has received a grant from the Dry July Foundation 2018 Grant Program.

The grant will go towards the following:

• Radiotherapy Waiting Room Refurbishment to make patients and their carers more comfortable while they wait for treatment

Music in bunkers for CPMCC Patients

Thanks to funds raised by Dry July, The Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre Westmead have been able to purchase iPads for their radiation treatment rooms, to entertain and distract patients during treatment.

During radiation treatment, patients are alone in the room for treatment whilst therapists control treatment from outside. The iPads mean that patients can select their own music to help make the treatment space for comfortable, and is more calming than the quiet, clinical environment usually found in radiotherapy bunkers.

The music has helped patients reduce anxiety and take their mind off the daily treatment, making them more relaxed.

There has been great feedback from the iPads, and many requests for a large range of music genre choices.

One patient, Beverley, recently commented that she enjoyed listening to the 60s and 70s jukebox music during treatment; "It's a great distraction and takes my mind off the event of treatment. It makes me feel happy and reduces my stress levels".

As told to Laura Adamson - one of our radiation therapists.
