When a person is diagnosed with a rare cancer, it can be an isolating and overwhelming experience.
Often, they have never heard of their cancer type before being diagnosed, let alone met anyone else with a similar diagnosis. When you are one of just a handful of people in the country – or even the world – diagnosed with the same cancer, it can be hard to find anyone who really understands.
That’s why Rare Cancers Australia (RCA) support groups are so vital. They bring together people who have been on a similar path, providing safe, confidential spaces to share, learn, ask questions and connect.
Groups run by phone and videoconference, alongside private Facebook Groups and monthly coffee and cake sessions at RCA offices in Bowral and Wollongong, NSW. Each group is facilitated by a RCA Specialist Cancer Navigator.
Here’s what some members have to say about our support groups:
- “RCA support groups became my lifeline. We’re scattered all over. Without these groups, how would we ever find each other? We share treatment options, clinical trials, and things to ask our doctors. It wasn’t just support. It was survival.”
- “Their monthly support groups provide a space to talk to others who understand what it’s like having a rare diagnosis. There is genuine kindness and care that comes from each group. It’s a safe place to share thoughts that those unaffected by cancer wouldn’t understand.”
- “They introduced me to a network of peers that I could chat to, share experiences with, ask questions of and that genuinely understood where I was coming from, because they’d been there too.”
Your fundraising in Dry July 2026 will help keep our support groups running and growing, ensuring more people can connect with each other and nobody has to feel they are facing a rare cancer alone. "
