Bringing comfort to kids while mum has cancer

When a mum is diagnosed with cancer, often her first thoughts are not for herself, but for her children.

A cancer diagnosis can have a ripple effect through the whole household, adding a schedule of appointments and treatment on top of already busy family life, and heightening emotions. Young children can pick up on these changes, but not really understand what they all mean.

Mummy’s Wish helps bring comfort, support and closeness to children through these times of change and uncertainty. Our carefully curated care packs for kids include:

· Comfort – a teddy bear to cuddle, with a recordable heart so mums can leave a special message for the times they can’t be together

· Understanding – storybooks that are carefully selected based on circumstances and children’s ages, to help talk about topics like cancer, treatment side effects and grief.

Mum Olga reflects on the difference these gifts made for her daughters.

“The Mummy’s Wish comfort teddy bears really helped my daughters sleep better, and the special book we received was so great at helping me to better answer all of their questions, like where my hair had gone!” she recalls.

Last year, Mummy’s Wish supported about 1,000 families through a mum’s cancer diagnosis, including sending almost 2,000 bears to children. That number continues to grow each year, making our support more important than ever. Your fundraising this Dry July helps us to continue bringing comfort, support and closeness to children through every stage of their mum’s cancer experience.
