Dry July fundraising has enabled Calvary Mater Newcastle to purchase the following items:

• Two ultrasound machines for cannulation purposes in the Day Treatment Centre

• One standing weigh scale with height measure for the Day Treatment Centre

• Occupational Therapy Oncology Loan Pool and Pressure Care Comfort Equipment

• Pressure relieving equipment for Ward 4B (Surgical)

• Four chemotherapy treatment chairs for the Day Treatment Centre

• Mercy Hospice Arts Health Kitchen Table Conversations Project - Promoting Connections, Story Telling and Conversations about Life and Living

Bendigo Health are using Dry July funds for their Cancer Wellness Program and Wellness Centre

Your fundraising for Dry July will enable Bendigo Health to continue a range of wellness activities offered to cancer patients, such as in-person and tailored online yoga and meditation sessions, oncology massage, dog therapy, and fresh produce boxes delivered to vulnerable patients during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Funds raised will also help establish a new stand-alone Wellness Centre within the Bendigo hospital precinct, set to open in coming months.

The Wellness Centre and the activities offered will enable patients to feel supported with not only their physical health, but also their social and emotional health, leading to better health outcomes for the patient.

Dry July fundraising helps Redkite provide essential support for young people living with cancer.

The funds raised by participants of Dry July 2020 will help Redkite to provide essential support to young people with cancer and their families from the moment of diagnosis.

You have ensured that Redkite’s caring and professional support team are able to provide counselling, social work support and information when a young person with cancer needs it. Because of you, young people with cancer and their families are supported and they will know that big things are still possible.

Dry July 2020 funds will help PCFA develop a Prostate Cancer Specialist Telenursing Service!

Your heartfelt determination during Dry July has helped raise a remarkable $416,000 for Australia’s first dedicated Prostate Cancer Specialist Telenursing Service.

With thanks to you, the service will give thousands of Australian men access to expert nursing care, just by calling Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA).

PCFA will also be there for their wives and partners, their sons and daughters – providing the latest information, comfort, and care. Your compassion and kindness speaks to your concern for our community.

An anonymous donor has very generously donated $100,000 to our Dry July fundraiser!

This anonymous donor vowed to match all donations made to participants supporting Bendigo Health up until the 1st of August, and added a very generous personal donation!

As you probably know, everything Bendigo Health raises through Dry July will go directly towards its Cancer Wellness Program and establishing a dedicated stand-alone Wellness Centre within the hospital precinct.

Hazel Bennini's Story

Hazel Bennini was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2016. Thankfully she is now officially in full remission.

Hazel first noticed something wasn’t quite right when she returned from an overseas trip in 2015. “I noticed a lump in my neck in October. Following some tests I remember my doctor called me at 7.30am on Christmas Eve morning to tell me to head straight to St Vincent’s for a bone marrow test. That’s when I found out the cancer had become very aggressive.”

Hazel underwent Chemotherapy from January to May. It was a very difficult time but she credits the staff at St Vincent’s Hospital’s Cancer Centre Chemotherapy Day Unit for helping to ease the burden.

Going dry to support their patients

A team from St Vincent’s Oncology and Haematology ward are doing Dry July to give back to their inspiring patients.

6th Floor Dry July Team leader and Registered Nurse, Kate Gore said being in lockdown has made the team even more aware of how challenging life can be for patients diagnosed with cancer.

“We only have to make a small sacrifice by giving up alcohol for a month, whereas our patients make huge sacrifices daily, especially now. A lot of patients have long admissions and pre-COVID they could have visitors everyday but not during the pandemic,” Kate said.
