Elliot's Story

One afternoon late in 2019 Elliot did what he normally does after school. He went for a run.

What wasn’t normal was the distinct pain he felt in his right knee afterwards. Elliot put it down to a 16-year-old’s growing pains.

When the pain persisted, tests revealed Elliot had an osteosarcoma tumour, the size of a golf ball, on his right tibia.

An immediate amputation was recommended so Elliot and his mother contacted Chris O’Brien Lifehouse for a second opinion.

Eight months of chemotherapy, five surgeries and 400 stitches later, Elliot has 80% titanium in his right leg. He completed his HSC during his treatment and while he’s not quite back to running yet, he’s living life to the fullest.

Elliot’s care journey at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse spanned two years and during this time he contributed ideas for the hospital’s new You Can Centre, a purpose-built space dedicated to the care of young adult and adolescent patients.

The Hon. Dominic Perrottet officially opened the You Can Centre in April 2022 and Elliot stood shoulder to shoulder with the NSW Premier to cut the ribbon.

Supported by Sony Foundation Australia, and Dry July Foundation, the new You Can Centre at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse features a music studio, gaming and theatre room, kitchen and dining areas and a balcony. With multiple activities on tap, it is a warm and comforting place for young patients like Elliot to connect and support each other.

“Although my time at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse as a patient is over, I will always be the biggest advocate for the innovation and adaptation to the modern hospital scene,” says Elliot. “The You Can Centre has a great community feel and I genuinely believe that it will only change lives, but also help save them.”
