Nepean Cancer Care provides a comprehensive cancer service for
both inpatients and outpatients. The centre offers a 'one
stop shop' with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and palliative care
services. There is a collaborative approach to patient centred
care including a strong affiliation with palliative care
consultants along with the community resources available in the
area. The departments work together with community services to
ensure a comprehensive approach to patient care. This
multidisciplinary approach to treatment and healing encompasses
physical, emotional and social care. The centre offers a team of
psycho-oncology and allied health staff to give our patients the
extra support they may need.
Last year Nepean were able to purchase a number of items
that made the cancer journey a little easier. A few of these
were a blanket warmer, a portable ultrasound machine to make
inserting needles quick and less traumatic, iPads with a music
library for patients to create their own playlists to listen to
whilst receiving radiotherapy and a bio-impedance machine for early
detection of secondary lymphoedema. The major project has been a
refurbishment of the courtyard and main waiting area in the cancer
centre in order to create a space of reflection and peace.
"Nepean Cancer Care is thrilled to be involved in the Dry
July 2012 campaign. Last year we were blown away with the
level of support from the community and were able to purchase a
number of items that helped our patients cope with their
treatment. Our major focus was the courtyard and waiting room
refurbishment. This year our focus will again be on making
the cancer journey a little less daunting for patients and we hope
to raise funds to put towards improving the inpatient
environment."- Jenny O'Baugh, Nepean Hospital
