Based on the Gold Coast, the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans are one of sixteen teams within the National Rugby League premiership and came into the competition in 2007.
Out of the squad of twenty five players, twelve have put their beers down and thrown their hands up in support of Dry July helping raise money for those adults living with cancer particularily those in our own backyard at The Mater Hospital in Brisbane.
For Titans youngster Jordan Rankin, the decision to hang up the drinking shoes was an easy one to make after losing his father just over a year ago to the all too common disease.
“Dry July is something I'm very excited to be a part of,” Said Rankin
“My dad lost his battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma late last year, so I feel privileged to do something so small for such a great cause.”
The funds raised from sponsorship from the simple efforts of these Titans players and many others will directly benefit the lives of adults living with cancer right across Australia.
Funds raised will purchase music and art therapy classes and medical equipment for the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. Funding will also refurbish the patient recreation room including lounge chairs, entertainment, cabinets and shade sails for outdoor balconies.
Rankin is also joined by fellow team mates Luke O’Dwyer, Ben Ridge, Luke Bailey, Michael Henderson, Bodene Thompson, Brenton Lawrence, Matt Srama, Luke Bailey, Anthony Laffranchi, Matt White and Nathan Friend.
Not just addressing the need to raise funds for Cancer Titan Ben Ridge pointed out that “Not only is it for a cause that affects so many,” Said Ridge, “but I also wanted to take the opportunity to push the healthier side of getting off the drink.”
“It isn't healthy to be drinking all the time and the behaviour can not only affect you, but those around you also”
You can still have a good time without the booze - and why not enjoy that whilst raising some much needed funds for Cancer.” Said Ridge.
The campaign has now attracted over 11,000 participants and already $1.3 million in donations to date and the twelve Titans players are only too happy to keep this growing.
