Funds raised this Dry July will help young adult cancer survivors advance their education and offer career support

About Us

Every day, 63 young people in Australia have their lives tragically turned upside down by cancer. They become up to six times more likely to face mental health issues than their peers. These young people often feel disconnected from their friends, isolated and alone. Nobody really seems to understand what they’re experiencing. Young cancer patients are also at higher risk of death from cancers than younger children or older adults.

These real experiences are at the heart of everything Canteen does. We don’t shy away from the tough stuff - we use it to build hope, resilience and meaning. We connect young people with others their age who ‘get it’ and with specialist staff who truly understand cancer’s challenges.

We also help young people take back what cancer tries to take away from them. Young people stuck in hospital having treatment or those at home caring for a sick parent often experience a loss of independence and control, feel isolated or alone and can miss out on opportunities for important educational or career development. We offer programs to help young people develop resilience and leadership skills which stay with them through to adulthood and help to shape their lives in the face of cancer.

Your support means Canteen can continue helping young cancer patients stay connected

Statistics have shown that less than half of young cancer patients have high confidence of achieving their education goals and even fewer – less than a third – have high confidence of achieving their employment goals. Your support is helping us change that.

By participating and fundraising in Dry July this year, you are helping Canteen to continue their work in helping young cancer patients stay connected to study or work, both during and after their cancer treatment through Canteen’s Education and Career Support Service (ECS).

Last year, around 200 young patients were supported through the ECS, assisting young cancer patients to identify their vocational goals and values and developing individualised support plans to help them achieve their education or career milestones.

“I think the ECS is one piece of the puzzle to helping you on that journey as a cancer patient or survivor. ECS helps us discover a path forward, a path after diagnosis and cancer treatment”

- Leilani, a former Canteen Youth Ambassador who has used Canteen’s Education and Career Support Service.

From all of us here at Canteen and the young people impacted by cancer who will continue to use ECS moving forward, THANK YOU for your support. We couldn’t do this without you.
