About

The Cancer Therapy Centre at Liverpool Hospital was opened in 1995. Prior to this, patients with cancer living in the Liverpool and Campbelltown regions would catch a bus for treatment at the Prince of Wales Hospital, a round journey of approximately 2 hours. Therefore, the building of Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre was seen as a very important step in the local management of cancer patients for South Western Sydney.

Since then, the Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre has grown substantially and currently sees approximately 2,000 new cancer patients per year and provides chemotherapy and other intravenous therapies for approximately 7,000 occasions of service per year. In addition, approximately 12,000 radiation treatments occur at Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre annually.

Liverpool Hospital conducts a wide range of clinical trials in oncology and, in their 15 years of existence, have developed a reputation of being an innovative oncology unit. Its research strengths include health services research, quality of life measurement and improvement of toxicities of treatment and the assessment of patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and patients who may be socially disadvantaged.. They have a “Touch Screen” computer program that encourages patients to enter their “Quality of Life” data directly into an electronic system. They have an electronic medical record system that is shared with the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre.

2011-2012 will be an exciting time for the Liverpool Cancer Service. They are about to undergo significant building works that will lead to an expansion in medical oncology and radiation oncology treatment areas. This includes a complete redesign of its waiting areas, an increase in the number of chemotherapy chairs and a redevelopment of the clinical area. They are currently involving cancer patients, their families and significant others in giving advice about the best layout of these areas. Therefore, fundraising donations will be welcome in the new facility to further enhance the patient experience.

“The Liverpool Cancer Therapy team thank you for your kind donation to Dry July. This will help the Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre provide first class treatment with as much comfort as possible for the patients and their carers. This will be done through the purchase of special equipment to be utilized within the Cancer Therapy Centre and the Haematology/Oncology Ward. The Dry July fundraising will help accomplish the level of comfort our patients deserve.”
